Man charged with serious late night assault

A man has appeared before a Special Sitting of Galway District Court and been charged with assault causing harm arising out of an incident on Monday in the city which has left another man critical in a Dublin hospital.
On Tuesday morning, Dean O’Brien (23) of 16 Drom Chaoin, Rahoon appeared before Judge Geoffrey Browne on a charge under Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act following an assault on 28 year old Barry Mannion of the Clybaun Road, Knocknacarra.
The incident took place at the junction of Upper Dominick Street, Henry Street and William Street at 3.30am on Monday morning.
The victim suffered serious injuries to his head and face and as a result was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where he underwent emergency head surgery.
Garda Tom Doyle told the Court that O’Brien had been arrested on Monday afternoon and held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, and was charged with the assault just before his Court appearance.
He made no reply when charged, the Court heard.
O’Brien was remanded in custody until next Monday’s sitting of Galway District Court on the request of Inspector Seán Glynn.
Defending solicitor, Susan McLoughlin, said that this was agreed at this point.
Gardai are seeking witnesses to the incident and are appealing to anybody who was in the area to contact them at Galway Garda Station on 091 538000.
