Man carried out robbery while on bail
A 32-years-old man who is currently serving two years for threatening to stab two teachers with a broken bottle, faces further sentence in December for robbing his local store.
Kenneth Goldbey, a father of two from 28 Gaelcarrig Park, Newcastle, Galway, came to Galway Circuit Court last February with his bags packed, knowing he was going to get a custodial sentence for threatening to stab two teachers, whom he didn’t know, as they were going into a Hallowe’en party at a house in Laurel Park, Newcastle, Galway, on October 31, 2013.
Goldbey was sentenced to three years in prison for the violent incident with the final year suspended.
He was brought in custody before the same court where he pleaded guilty to robbing €300 from a member of staff in his local XL shop in Laurel Park, Newcastle, on December 27 last year.
Goldbey was out on bail awaiting sentence for the 2013 offence when he committed the robbery.
Judge Rory McCabe remanded him in continuing custody last week to appear before the court again in December for sentence.
In a separate matter, Goldbey was brought before Galway District Court last week also where he pleaded guilty to stealing a €600 bicycle on October 4 last year.
He and another man were captured on CCTV stealing the bicycle.
Goldbey was apprehended and assisted Gardai in locating the bike which was then returned to its rightful owner.
Defence solicitor, Noel Rhattigan said Goldbey was the father of two children and was doing well since going to Castlerea Prison where he was undertaking some educational courses there.
Noting Goldbey was already serving a two-year sentence imposed by the Circuit Court, Judge Fahy sentenced him to two months in prison for the theft of the bicycle, to run concurrently to the sentence already being served.
