Man arrested following stabbing in Woodquay

A man was hospitalised following a stabling in the city overnight.

Gardai are investigating a series of incidents including robbery, threatening behaviour and and a stabbing) between 2am and 3am.

At around 2.15am a 38-year-old man reported to the Gardai that he had been threatened by a man with a knife on the Headford Road.

Gardai then received a call that two males (in their 20s) had been robbed and threatened at knife point and that two mobile phones and a wallet were taken on the Headford Road, and the suspect left in the direction of Woodquay.

Gardai were then made aware that an 18-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach at Woodquay at around 2.30am. He was taken to University Hospital Galway, where his condition is described as non life threatening.

A man fitting the description of the suspect was arrested in Eyre Square at around 3am and detained at Galway Garda Station.  in Eyre Square and conveyed to Galway Garda Station where he is being detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses, or anyone who may have any information to contact Galway Garda station on 091 538000, where an incident room has been set up.
