MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING AGGRAVATED BURGLARY IN BALLINASLOE

A man in his 20s has been arrested following an aggravated burglary at an elderly man’s home in Ballinasloe in the early hours of this morning.

Shortly before 2am, a lone male forced his way into the man’s house on Jubilee street and assaulted him.

He then forced the man to go with him to a bank machine on Dunlo street, where he tried to make him take out cash.

At this stage, a passer by intervened, and the raider fled the scene.

The 80 year old was taken to Portiuncula hospital for treatment of minor injuries, but has since been discharged.

Gardaí arrested a man in his twenties this afternoon in relation to the incident.

He’s being held at Ballinasloe Garda station under section 4 of the criminal justice act, and can be held for up to 24 hours.

Ballinasloe Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Jubilee street between two and three am to contact them.
