A man who has been accused of raping a young UK woman in the city over the weekend has been refused bail.

The man – who can’t be named for legal reasons – appeared in custody before Spiddal District Court today.

He was arrested in Killarney on Tuesday evening where he’d a ticket for Belfast in his possession as well as 1-thousand-pound-sterling.

The man – who has a Galway address – told the court that he went to Killarney as he was "very drunk" and needed to "clear his head."

An application for bail was objected to by Gardai because of the seriousness of the charge and the flight risk posed by the young man.

Garda Padraig Healy of Galway Garda Station also objected to bail on the "strength of the evidence" against the man.
