Making A Mark – unique drama capturing an extraordinary life

Making A Mark is a unique show which opens at the city’s Town Hall Theatre next Thursday, April 21, kicking off its nationwide tour. The play, which premiered at the 2019 Dublin Theatre Festival had a sellout run there, winning the Judges’ Choice Award.

Mark Smith, who has Down Syndrome, decided to dramatise his life after watching Robbie Lawlor on The Late Late Show a few years ago. Robbie, who is HIV positive and dedicates his life to raising awareness about the condition, was talking about his show, Rapids, a documentary drama.

The following week Mark approached his good friend, Aisling Byrne, to ask when she would make a play about his life and they co-created Making A Mark which was written by Shaun Dunne. Mark certainly has a story to tell.

He’s an award-winning actor and founding member of Run of the Mill Theatre, whose roles include playing King Lear. He won a silver medal at the Special Olympics World Games in North Carolina in 1999. He also studied Anthropology at Maynooth University.  When he’s not on stage, he works at Tesco.

And that’s just for starters. Friendship, ambition, disruption, grief and frustration are also on the menu in this show.
