Makeshift Galway see great run ended by eager Rossies
Roscommon 1-20
Galway 1-15
Pádraic Ó Ciardha at Dr Hyde Park
A potent mix of inexperience and complacency cost Galway their 100% record in this year’s league campaign as they went down to a slick looking Roscommon side in Dr Hyde Park last Sunday,
While the primary goal of the Spring, a return to Division 1, had been achieved in style against Derry the weekend previous, Galway still would not have wanted to lose face against neighbours Roscommon, who they now take on in Sunday’s Division 2 final in Croke Park and could well face again come championship.
You can be sure that Pádraic Joyce and his management team warned the players not to take their eye off the ball in the lead up to this one and you can also be sure the players took heed of the message. It’s one thing to listen to instructions in a dressing room, however. It’s another thing altogether to follow through on them out on the pitch.
Buoyed by a big home crowd and the knowledge that they needed a win to secure their own return to Division 1, Roscommon tore into Galway in the first half. Anthony Cunningham’s men were more motivated, more energetic and simply far better during the opening 35 minutes. The men in maroon too often lacked the drive to throw themselves in for a breaking ball or to make up the extra few yards to track a runner and were shown up.
