Make waves with Youth Orchestra – video auditions taking place now
Galway’s Symphonic Waves Youth Orchestra is looking to recruit new, young musicians as it continues to expand. And it couldn’t be easier to apply because auditions are taking place by video.
Symphonic Waves began in 2017 with 26 string players – it was formed as part of the cultural programme for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture. Since then its numbers have almost tripled and the ensemble has expanded from a string group to a symphony orchestra, with the addition of brass, wind and percussion sections in 2019. Now the group is welcoming new members.
Symphonic Waves Youth Orchestra opened 2020 on a high note with a widely-acclaimed joint concert in Galway with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland. This event, which featured on RTÉ News, was one of the first times that Ireland’s National Youth Orchestra has collaborated with another youth orchestra.
That was followed by a performance at the National Concert Hall, Dublin in February for the 25th Festival of Youth Orchestras. That night, the group was presented with a Youth Orchestra achievement award from the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras for the development of Symphonic Waves and its enrichment programme, Symphonic Schools.
Then Covid-19 struck and in mid-March, the country was shut down. Despite this, Symphonic Waves plans to deliver its reimagined programme later this year or early in 2021.
