Galway Bay fm newsroom – The 20 year campaign to provide a fire station in the South Connemara region has taken a huge step forward.

Galway County Council has agreed to allocate 30 thousand euro in its 2014 budget towards the service.

The motion, put forward by Connemara Councillor Seosamh O’ Laoi, provides that the funding facilitate the council in advancing a suitable site or an existing building to accommodate a retained fire station in An Cheathru Rua/ Cashla.

Councillor Tim Broderick later questioned the validity of the motion, and guaranteeing such funding before the county council holds its budget meeting on Monday.

However, he decided against proposing a counter motion.

Last month, Environment Minister Phil Hogan called on the county council to show real commitment if his Department was to consider funding a fire service in South Connemara.
