The credit crunch is having a major affect on community facilities in Galway.

The multi-million euro Knocknacarra District Centre, which has been in the pipeline for many years looks set to be scaled down.

The project was supposed to be a public private partnership with the Moritz Group and was estimated to cost in the region of 13 million euro.

At a meeting of the City Council last night, it was agreed that the pitches at Millars Lane would not be rezoned for housing.

However, an alternative option for a community centre in Knocknacarra must now be explored, similar to the Westside community centre.
