Galway Bay fm newsroom – Ceannt train station in the city is set for major redevelopment.
The City Council has granted planning permission to Iarnród Éireann to re-organise the existing building in the city centre to increase the public area.
The permission has been granted with 14 conditions attached.
Iarnród Éireann has been granted permission to create a new waiting area in the existing station that will be accessible from the main platform.
The re-development of the station also involves a new 95-square meter, double-height glass and steel concourse, a seating area, shops and a vending area.
Among the conditions attached to the redevelopment of Ceannt Station is the requirement for a conservation architect and an archaeologist to monitor the work.
The Commemorative Plaque and Gaslight fitting must all be re-erected on the front of the building.
Planners have also stipulated that a black and white photographic record of the station be kept and the carpark be restricted to passengers using the public transport.
The City Council says the grant of permission for these works at Ceannt Station will not prejudice any future development of the station which may include a rail link to the Docks.
