Major Eyre Sq Centre makeover in pipeline

The Eyre Square Shopping Centre will be able to attract international retail names, after An Bord Pleanála gave the go-ahead for a major extension facing onto Kennedy Park.

Property agents working on behalf of the receivers who control the centre said the extension will secure the future of existing tenants, and also help attract major international brands.

They said that brand names have been unable to open in Galway City because of a lack of suitable retail space.

Last September, the receivers who took control of parts of the centre were granted permission by the City Council for the multi-million euro makeover, which involves a 13,000 square foot block including five retail units and an outdoor café/restaurant with deck area on a mezzanine level.

Michael McAteer and Paul McCann of Grant Thornton want to demolish the existing Kennedy Park entrance and access ‘ramps’ and to construct a new three-storey building between Ballalley Lane and the former Bank of Scotland (Ireland) premises. It will involve the removal of 10 smaller shop units.

“The expected additional footfall will assist in stabilising, in the immediate and long-term, the existing major tenants and provide the potential to attract additional international brands in the future,” the they said.
