Major conference in city in advance of World Aids Day

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Gender, equality and HIV are being discussed at a major conference in the city today.

The conference on health and gender equity is organised by the Development Studies Association Ireland and the Irish Forum for Global Health and Gender ARC.

It’s to co-incide with World Aids Day on Monday, December 1st.

Zambia-based, Aids activist, Fr. Michael Kelly will give the keynote speech at the conference in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill which concludes today.

Meanwhile, almost three in every thousand people tested for HIV as part of a screening programme at the Mater Hospital in Dublin were diagnosed with the infection.

The rate is high by international standards – widespread screening is recommended for a prevalence of one in one thousand.

The results of the Mater-Bronx Rapid HIV Testing Project have been released as part of the 2013 European HIV Testing Week.

Dr. Ger O’ Connor is one of the doctors in the Emergency room, he says the test is non-invasive and the results are fast.
