Maher is on board
A revamped Galway senior camogie management and backroom team, which will include Galway great Therese Maher, is due to be ratified at next Monday evening’s County Board meeting.
Galway boss Cathal Murray has assembled an impressive set-up. Along with 2013 All-Ireland winner and five-time All-Star Maher, who will be involved as part of the backroom support, the Sarsfields man has recruited ex-Waterford camogie manager Donal O’Rourke and Gort’s Mike Finn.
O’Rourke, who will act as coach, served as Waterford manager for two years, guiding the Déise to back-to-back All-Ireland quarter-finals in 2018 and 2019, a game in which they led the Tribeswomen by five points at one stage, only for Murray’s charges to recover and go on to win the O’Duffy Cup.
Selector Finn is also highly regarded, having previously been involved with Gort’s and Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry’s senior hurlers while, in camogie, he coached Pres. Athenry to an All-Ireland final. In another boost, Orla Kilkenny has returned for another year as selector and Robbie Lane continues as S&C coach.
However, Murray will establish a different backroom team for Galway’s intermediate side, after Minister of State for Sport Jack Chambers confirmed this week that counties ‘second’ teams, having missed out on competition in 2020, can return to training from April 19 onwards.
