Magners league kicks off

AMID all the current World Cup drama, the Magners League season for Connacht kicks off this weekend almost unbeknownst to the wider sporting public. Connacht entertain the Newport Gwent Dragons at the Sportsground on Friday evening at 6pm as they go in search of their sixth straight opening day victory.

Playing domestic rugby during a World Cup will rankle many of the sport’s more ardent fans who feel it is hard to generate publicity and interest in the league in such an environment. However, the early season contests — which include three consecutive away games in as many weeks following this clash — will provide Connacht with an opportunity to gain a foothold in the table while the international players are tied up in France.

The kick off time will allow fans with just enough time to get a comfortable seat in front of a TV for the crucial World Cup encounter between Ireland and France at 8pm and if statistics and form are to be believed, then Connacht fans can expect to be smiling following victory.
