Macnas pull plug on Hallowe’en

THE ‘will they, won’t they’ summer saga of whether or not Macnas would stage a parade in the city looks set to continue as organisers have been forced to pull the plug on a planned Hallowe’en parade.

According to John Ashton, General Manager of Macnas, it was “highly unlikely” this decision — which was made after the community theatre company’s high expectations of financial support from the Galway business community failed to materialise — would be reversed.

“It’s an awful difficult decision but we haven’t been pledged enough money. We came under enormous political and public pressure to hold a summer parade and we did that at a huge financial cost.

“We rely entirely on grant aid and sponsorship because we provide all our events free of charge for the people of Galway but a Hallowe’en event is not feasible this year.”
