The Lunchtime with ConTempo concert series, presented by Galway Music Residency, will continue next Tuesday, May 3, with a focus on the music of Ukraine.

The performance, which features a Ukrainian string quartet repertoire will be at the City’s St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church from 1.10pm to 1.50pm.

ConTempo will perform Valentin Silvestrov’s String Quartet No. 3 as the centrepiece.  This piece has an Irish connection, as its composer has credited Eamon Quinn of Louth Contemporary Music Society with giving him the “impulse and motivation” to create it.

“I believe there is some Irish accent and some simple melodies that permeate the whole work which may sound as symbols of this wonderful country in whose destiny and historical legacy I perceive a close spiritual affinity to Ukraine, my homeland,” the composer says.

Born in Kiyv in 1937, and recently evacuated to Germany, Silvestrov  is one of the foremost names in contemporary music.  This example of his works features lyrical melodies interspersed with a more contemporary style.

Entry to Tuesday’s show is free and all are welcome. Booking is recommended through www.eventbrite.ie.

This concert will be performed in the county later in the month but details are not yet available.
