Luminosa set to reach new heights as Sinéad becomes guest conductor
Éirí is the title of the 2022 concert season being presented by local string orchestra, Luminosa Music. Corofin conductor and performer Sinéad Hayes, who has gained a reputation for her musical work at home and abroad, will be the group’s guest conductor for its two performances – one next month and the other in September – in the city’s St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church.
Éirí/Arise refers to the themes of these concerts. The first one, Aistear/Odyssey will be on Sunday, March 20, and Athrú/Transformation will be on Thursday, September 22 .
“We are going to bring our audiences on a musical odyssey, contemplating the significance of the centenary of the publication of Joyce’s odyssey, and how our personal journeys can be our own masterpieces,” says Lucy Hayward O’Leary of Luminosa, referring to the centenary of the publication of Ulysses.
“The concert programmes travel through time, beginning in 1604 with John Dowland and moving through works that have a particular resonance,” she says of next month’s event.
That will include a performance of Nocturne by the late Dublin composer John Kinsella in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, where it premiered in 1994.
“We are particularly looking forward to performing Vivaldi’s Double Cello Concerto with soloists Adrian Mantu and Alona Kliuchka,” Lucy continues.
The highlight will be Janaček’s Suite for Strings – and there’s more.
“The journey wouldn’t be complete without a return home to our own Irish contemporary canon and a work by Deirdre McKay, The Meltwater,” Lucy says.
