Love me ‘tender’ – would you swipe right for Seán?

The best thing about the Government’s broadband debacle, and Seán Kyne’s subsequent elevation to higher office, is that the Galway West TD is on television and radio more often and has had to use the word “tender” regularly.

That word has cropped up quite a bit in connection with the independent auditor’s report into the tender process for the State’s broadband contract, which is what caused all the fuss about Minister Denis Naughton resigning in the first place.

Repeated use of the work ‘tender’ wouldn’t be remarkable at all, in the circumstances, except Seánín has a unique way of pronouncing the word, in a strong Connemara accent, that makes it sound like he’s saying “Tinder” rather than “Tender”.

It’s an easy mistake to make, in fairness.

A tender is an offer or proposal, usually in writing, offering to provide a particular service for a particular price. Tinder is an online dating website or app, where you ‘swipe right’ to make or accept an offer or proposal to chat and/or meet, although usually no money changes hands!
