Love Buzz make move to main stage after lockdown

In late 2019, alt-rock three-piece The Love Buzz joined Felonies and Turnstiles in sweating out the upstairs of the Róisín Dubh. It would have seemed unlikely at the time that the group’s next Galway show would come, backed by MCD, a full two years later but the time between shows is unlikely to stretch so far again.
As was the case then, The Love Buzz’s upcoming Róisín gig, scheduled for November 29, follows the release of an EP.
Here Comes the Scum is the Cork trio’s sophomore EP. Its five tracks are stylistically eclectic – the title track has the thrashy tempo of a pop punk anthem, Sainsbury’s is by equal measures brutal and poignant and 10 Spots has the infectious melody of an Undertones single.
The songs vary but the hooks are infallible – Kieran Hurley’s distinctive vocals bounce throughout the EP and his chemistry with drummer Henry Love and bassist Aidan Lynch is as clear in studio as it is on stage.
“It’s something we’ve always done,” Aidan says of hopping between genres. “I think some may call it confusion… Some may call it certainty in being unsure. I know when I listen to music, I don’t just listen to one genre so I don’t see why it should be too different when I’m making it. It’s something I enjoy. It happens by accident but it’s a happy accident.”
Harp has been stuck in the head of anyone who heard it since its release in November of last year, but Sainsbury’s stands out as the emotional core of the EP.
A ballad that covers themes of love, violence and Anglo-Irish disconnection, it is an intensely affecting song from a usually light-hearted punk band.
