Loughrea’s super-sub Shaughnessy strikes two late goals to thwart Turloughmore
Loughrea 4-17
Turloughmore 1-21

TWO cracking injury-time goals from Darren Shaughnessy turned matters in Loughrea’s favour as they retained the Kevin Burke Tyres Senior League hurling title in Athenry last Thursday evening.
Now this was a strange game. It was the type of contest that would drive sports psychologists mad. For the opening quarter it looked like Turloughmore did not want to know, as Loughrea reigned supreme, scoring with ease and leading by 2-8 to no score.
Turlough eventually got going and a recovery was kick started, resulting in the margin being down to seven at the break. They continued to do the majority of scoring on the resumption and took the lead for the first time on 54 minutes when Sean Loftus slotted over yet another free to put them 1-19 to 2-15 ahead.
Both sides responed with points as the game entered additional time and trailing by a point, it was here that young Loughrea substitute Darren Saughnessy left his mark on proceedings with a brace of superb goals.
The opener owed much to the vision of free taker Jamie Ryan who gave up the option of a safe point to level matters. Instead, he passed short to Shaughnessy who blasted home from in front of goal to put them two points ahead. On 65 minutes, Shaughnessy displayed his killer instinct again when he gathered a Martin McManus pass and once more went for the major score as he bore down on Mark Fahy’s goal. The two goals completed the perfect recovery for Loughrea as they secured a five point victory.
