A Loughrea priest has defended his weekend homily which was critical of the Government’s decision to cut automatic medical cards for over 70s.

Fr. Cathal Geraghty, who is the son of Patsy Geraghty, former chairman of Galway East Fianna Fáil, spoke about the budget cut at Saturday evening mass and midday mass yesterday. [19/10]

Fianna Fáil Mayor of Loughrea, Gabriel Burke, walked out of mass in St Brendan’s Cathedral yesterday when Fr. Geraghty began his homily.

Mayor Burke told Galway Bay Fm News that he went to mass to pray, not to listen to a political speech.

He returned to the church when the homily was over to participate in the rest of the mass.

Fr. Cathal Geraghty told Keith Finnegan today that it was difficult for him to criticise the government, given his background.
