Loughrea on the march as Turlough fall to painful loss
Loughrea 1-22
Turloughmore 2-16
Ivan Smyth at Duggan Park
A total of 1-5 without reply midway through the second half helped Loughrea edge through to a semi final showdown with Clarinbridge.
Tommy Kelly’s side were deserving winners in this fast-paced tie as they are now just one win away from a first county final appearance since 2013. They trailed 1-11 to 0-12 after 39 minutes but with Martin McManus outstanding up front in the final period, the winners struck 1-5 without reply.
After Anthony Burns, McManus, Neil Keary (free) and Dylan Shaughnessy all fired over to helped Loughrea move two clear, they surged further in front. McManus produced a superb catch from an Oisín Coyle delivery before offloading to Joe Mooney who was hauled down with referee Brian Keon awarding a penalty. Johnny Coen stepped up to dispatch the sliotar to the bottom right corner of the net.
Tiernan Killeen set McManus up to fire over and Loughrea had suddenly turned a two point deficit in to a 1-17 to 1-11 lead. Turloughmore did hit back with 1-2 without reply, the goal coming in fortuitous circumstances when Daithí Burke’s long range delivery took the slightest of touches off the hurl of Loughrea full back Paul Hoban which wrongfooted Gearoid Loughnane in goal.
Despite this break and Turloughmore reducing their deficit to a point, they were never able to regain parity as Loughrea found the scores when needed most to edge through. This was a polished display from a Loughrea side that showed once again why they are a force to be reckoned with.
