Date Published: 20-Dec-2011

Despite Corrandulla garda station being closed next year, the Garda will still be attached to the village.

That’s according to Superintendent Marie [MARRY] Skehill of Galway Garda Station, who was speaking to members of the County Joint Policing Committee.

She said it’s thought that when the station closes in Corrandulla next year, the Garda will be relocated to Loughgeorge station.

Superintendent Skehill told members of the committee that she knows that "no area likes to see their garda station close" but she’s confident there are "adequate resources in the district to meet the needs of Corrandulla".

Councillor Mary Hoade expressed concern on behalf of the residents of Corrandulla adding that there is a genuine fear in the locality about the closure.

Superintendent Skehill said that the existing garda station dates back to the 1940s and to refurbish it, would cost around 280 thousand euro.

Councillor Thomas Welby asked whether there would be any more closures of garda stations in the county in the future.

Deputy Seán Kyne said that according to the Justice Minister Alan Shatter, there is an ongoing review and more savings may be made next year.

Community representative, Frances O’ Reilly from Headford said there has been a number of break-ins in the area recently and on one occassion the burglars actually made themselves tea and sandwiches before leaving.

Councillor Mary Hoade says there will be consultation between Gardaí and locals in Corrandulla.
