It was a very bright start to the New Year for the Galway syndicate who finally collected their cheque for €13,295,379 in National Lottery offices in Dublin last Friday.

The winning syndicate, who do not wish their win to be a public one, were only identified as being from the county. They purchased their ticket – a €12 Quickpick – in News ‘N’ Choose, Loughrea, on the day of the draw.

The syndicate knew on the night of the draw that they were the winners of this record jackpot.

“I was at home when I checked the winning numbers on Aertel. I checked the first ticket, and I think we had a small prize, €5 or so, but I need to check that again when I get home!,” said one of the group.

“Then I checked the other ticket, and I called out to my husband, who was in the kitchen, ‘We have three numbers’. Then I called out again – ‘We have four numbers’. Then five. Then I shrieked ‘We have six numbers’. I couldn’t believe it,” she finished.

“I didn’t believe it at all, and thought it was all a joke. I checked, and then didn’t believe my own eyes so we called a friend to come over immediately to check the numbers again and make sure we weren’t hallucinating,” added another syndicate member.

“He must have checked the numbers about six times before he confirmed to us what we thought was true – that we had a Lotto ticket for over €13 million in our hands.”
