Long wait is over as Galway clubs swing back into action
THE return to action of one of the last domestic leagues in Europe following Covid-19 takes place this weekend with the start of the 2021/22 national basketball season.
There are four Galway clubs returning to action, with city club Titans back in the domestic league; but on the flip side, the 2019 history-making Maree BC women’s side has dropped out of the league due to a shortage of players, though there are efforts taking place to put together a side made up of mainly juvenile players to complete in the Galway League.
It is one of many changes on the basketball scene since the 2019/20 season was called to a halt in the second week of March, 2020 as Covid-19 began to take a grip on the world.
Up in HQ in Dublin, the sport’s governing body has lost its top press officer to a job in public relations; its league manager to the public service; and its CEO to public outrage after he shared a tweet during Euro 2021 which mocked England footballer, Raheem Sterling, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
It has been a rocky year and a half for the sport, and there will be some nerves that the resumption of the league – an indoor pursuit – will not lead to a spike in Covid-19 cases, though clubs are taking every precaution to prevent that.
There will be a lot of work for each club’s Covid-19 officers, but it is thanks to them that the league can tip-off this Saturday, and the Men’s Super League will see the usual opening day cracker as Maree and Moycullen are set to meet at the Kingfisher facility in NUI Galway (7pm).
