CITY TRIBUNE
Long awaited premiere of Into the Dark Woods
The long-awaited world premiere of Into the Dark Woods, presented by Galway’s award-winning Blue Teapot Theatre Company, will take place in September at the City’s Black Box Theatre. It’s a co-production with the Abbey Theatre.
Written by debut playwright Charlene Kelly, Into The Dark Woods is a story told through the lens of intellectual disability, drawing on archetypes found in fairytales and nature and featuring an inclusive cast.
Blue Teapot is made up of adult actors with a range of intellectual disabilities, whose work has been widely seen on stage and screen.
The company had long wanted to stage a theatre show written by one of its own members and Charlene’s play fulfils that ambition.
Into the Dark Woods was developed through a series of creative writing initiatives with local writer and dramaturg Eileen Gibbons and was originally meant to be staged as part of Galway’s tenure as European Capital of Culture – it was a 2020 commission.
