Scientists at NUI Galway have developed a new test to help in the global fight against TB.

The team has been working on the DNA test which allows doctors identify the exact bacteria that’s caused the illness in a patient, with the aim of speeding up their treatment.

The new test, called SeekTB, could also prove useful to centralised clinical reference labs for the purposes of tracking and conducting epidemiological studies on the various mycobacterium species comprising the complex.

The research carried out by NUI Galway’s Dr Thomas Barry, Dr Justin O’Grady and Dr Kate Reddington has been published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and PLoS ONE.
