The last fifteen months have forced musicians to come up with a world of ways to compensate for the absence of live performance – throwing themselves into home recording set-ups, improving aspects of their performance off stage with a view to returning as soon as venues reopen their doors.

But for Galway-born singer-songwriter Anna Carmody, life in lockdown has been the backdrop for the entirety of her time in the music industry.

With a business background, the indie-folk artist initially threw herself into her work and made huge strides, culminating in the release of her debut single Million Pieces last November.

Her second offering, Summer Air, was launched on June 4. An airy, melodic ballad, the track shows an instrumental maturity that belies Anna’s time writing songs. The manner in which she set about releasing it, too, suggests she is putting a lot of thought into her act from an early stage.

“I’ve been sitting on it for about a year, maybe eight or nine months,” she explains.

“It was when I moved back home at the start of the pandemic that I wrote it. It’s one of my more nature-based songs – I don’t tend to write about nature all that often but it was connecting with how I was feeling at the time.

“I had this whole plan that I was going to release every three months and I ended up deciding to give this one a bit longer… Get all those emails in to radio stations and give it more of a chance. I run my own start-up as well so that took a lot of my time too.”

Though her inclination is to throw herself into a series of releases, Anna is taking her time to build her act up before unloading her content. She feels inexperienced in the live arena but there is a real sense of excitement about honing her ability on stage.
