Olivia Divilly: enjoying going for cycles and hikes.

With sport temporarily halted throughout the country under the Covid-19 restrictions, EANNA O’REILLY catches up with two Galway ladies footballers who share an insight into their lockdown schedules, their training routines and their hopes for the future when the pitches of Ireland are open once again.

OLIVIA DIVILLY

(Kilkerrin/Clonberne and Galway senior footballer)

What have you found most challenging as a sportsperson about the Covid-19 lockdown during the last two months?

Establishing a routine, I’m not working much at the moment and training by myself can be hard at times. It’s difficult to know where you’re at when you aren’t training as a group.

What helps you to stay motivated as an athlete in the absence of training in your normal team environment?

Looking forward to returning is a big motivator. The possibility of a very different format for both club and county in championship this year is exciting and something you want to be prepared for as best you can.

Any particular skill(s) you’ve been working on during the lockdown for when football resumes?

Maintaining endurance and speed. Lots of time to work on balls skills, shooting and free taking. It’s also a great opportunity to rehab any niggles.

Favourite match(es) to look back on from your playing career so far?

I enjoy watching a bit of everything at the moment. I’ve looked back at the years we won the minor All Irelands (2013 & 2014) and how the style of play has changed. It’s also an opportunity to watch back on some defeats and reflect on what you can do better individually.

Any new hobbies or talents discovered during lockdown?

I enjoy keeping active. I’ve had a lot of time to go for cycles and hikes. I’ve played a bit of tennis too which I’ve really enjoyed!

What are you looking forward to most about the return of team sport in the future?

I’m looking forward to being back with teammates and working in a competitive environment. I can’t wait to play an actual game of football! It will be really nice to see everyone again and have a catch up.
