LOCAL FISHERMAN CLAIM VOLVO RACE WILL THREATEN THEIR LIVELIHOOD
Date Published: 19-Nov-2008
A Galway fishing family says their livelihood is being put at risk, because of proposed developments to facilitate the Galway stopover of the Volvo Ocean race.
Brothers Sean and Padraic Jennings from Longwalk in the city, say they have been asked to remove their lobster boats from the Quays to facilitate proposed floating pontoons.
The brothers, who have docked their boats at the harbour for over twenty years, say this will directly affect their livelihoods.
‘Let’s do it Galway’ applied to the city council to build new floating pontoons along the Centre Quay, Breathnach Quay, Quirke Quay and along the quay wall outside the Dock gates.
They state that the pontoons will facilitate the docking of boats associated with the Volvo Ocean race.
Fishing brothers Sean and Padraic Jennings, have both lodged objections to the development stating their livelihoods will be threatened by such moves.
Padraic says he and his brother are not against the Ocean Race, but points out that his family need to make a living as well.
