Galway Bay fm newsroom – A County Councillor says the intensive conservation measures in Connemara – such as SACs – are the greatest threat to the area since the foundation of the State.

Councillor Seosamh Ó Laoi was speaking at a meeting in Carna this week.

It was a stark message from Councillor Seosamh Ó Laoi – Connemara is being choked by conservation measures and various necessary developments, including roads, are being stymied because of the array of SACs, NHAs and other designations.

Councillor Ó Laoi said that Connemara Councillors were totally frustrated by conservation measure and it appeared they could do nothing about them – environmental matters were now placed above the general good of the community Councillor Ó Laoi said.

The Carna meeting was about road improvements but Councillor Ó Laoi said that the difficulties surrounding the proposed south Connemara road and the N. 59 north road showed the worst effects of conservation west of the Corrib.

Councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig said he was in agreement with Councillor Ó Laoi and that Connemara was facing a virtual shutdown unless some sense could be brought to conservation measures.
