CITY TRIBUNE
Local and international talent to the fore for Arts Festival
This year’s Galway International Arts Festival has plenty to offer music fans, with international acts and exciting new talent getting set to entice your eardrums. Of the gigs still to come in the Big Top, The Flaming Lips (next Thursday, July 26), Madness (Friday, July 27) and the sublime electronic outfit Caribou (Saturday, July 28) are all veterans of the festival circuit. Any of those gigs should provide a rollicking evening’s entertainment.
In the city centre venues, things get very interesting indeed. The acclaimed indie outfit The Wedding Present play Monroe’s Live next Wednesday, July 25, with support from the magnificent Galway band Oh Boland! A few nights later, Jerry Dammers from The Specials will play a DJ set on Friday, July 27. Expect ska and plenty of dance tunes.
In the Róisín Dubh, And So I Watch You from Afar (this Saturday) are a loud, dynamic and always-exciting live band. Paddy Hanna’s show the following night is also recommended. Aidan Moffat & RM Hubbert play the Róisín on Monday. The pair released an excellent album this year, and Moffat is best known for his work with the excellent Scottish outfit Arab Strap.
It’s great to see Galway’s Tracy Bruen getting a headline slot at the Arts Festival, and her show on Wednesday next is one to pencil in. Mongoose bring the Róisín’s festival to a finish on Sunday July 29. An emerging four-piece folk outfit from Dublin, they look set for big things in 2018. Seek out something you haven’t heard before and enjoy it!
