The train is terrific value – now more than ever, given that you can get from one city to another for the price of about a gallon of diesel – but boy do you have to be prepared for all human life in front of you.

It’s like someone confiscated all the shackles at ticket check-in and we’re all pressganged into one giant party, led off by hyper hens determined to eek out every second of the journey.

And yet you have to remember that your noisy neighbours would have been you 30 years ago. Now they could be your adult kids, if only this train didn’t leave the station before they got up in time for lunch.

It wasn’t so much that it was early for a hungover hen party however – more that it was the end of their evening that the beginning of a new day.

The bride, standing out from the morning crowd in her white dress and veil, looked like she might have been down this road before – and her black tee-shirt-clad fellow hens weren’t in the first flush of youth either.

Which might explain why the tee-shirts proclaimed I’m With the Bride; they maybe should have included a name and address or at least a mobile phone number in case they were split from the pack.

And what would be morning be without a few cans and a naggin to, quite literally, keep up the spirits?

They were boisterous but just having the craic – and you had to admire their constitution.

They were on the Galway to Limerick train recently – a train which was packed to the gills, despite doom-mongers suggesting it was a waste of taxpayers’ money.
