Date Published: 23-Jun-2011
Folk group Gráda play Monroe’s Live this Sunday, June 26. Consisting of members Gerry Paul (guitar), Nicola Joyce (vocals, bodhrán), Stephen Doherty (flute, whistle, accordion), David Doocey (fiddle, concertina), and Andrew Laking (bass), the group is based mostly in Galway, but spends much of the year on the road, touring Europe and America.
Gráda has released five albums, with the most recent, Natural Angle, bridging traditional Celtic and Appalachian tunes. It was produced by Tim O’Brien in Nashville and featured guest appearances by Odessa Jorgensen (Bearfoot) and Alison Brown.
Natural Angle captures the natural live energy of their live performances and is the group’s most complete selection of music to date. Through Gráda’s recent appearances at key Americana and roots festivals across four continents the band continues to win new fans at a rapid pace.
Gerry Paul has also collaborated with emerging Dutch songwriter Christof van der Ven. The pair toured through New Zealand with Tim O’Brien, and along the way they sang with Americana heroes Crooked Still. More recently, Gerry played in folk singer Noriana Kennedy’s band for the launch of her superb album Ebb ‘n’ Flow. Gráda’s singer Nicola Joyce also joined Kennedy for some of these shows.
Gráda embodies the eclectic and inclusive nature of the Galway folk scene. Nicola is from Headford, Gerry Paul hails from New Zealand and ,at the launch of Ebb ‘n’ Flow, they shared a stage with a singer from Dublin and another from Holland.
Gráda’s show in Monroe’s is simply unmissable. Tickets €15, doors 8.30pm.
