Lively Galway Utd come up trumps against Shelbourne
Galway United 3

THE First Division very rarely tends to disappoint and it certainly didn’t last Friday night at Eamonn Deacy Park. Galway United delivered a crucial 3-1 victory over table-toppers Shelbourne to cut the gap to seven points between the two sides.
United’s Shane Doherty opened the scoring in the early exchanges before Killian Brouder increased his side’s advantage with a header just after half time. Ruairi Keating secured all three points with a neat finish at the end of the game, with Brian McManus pulling a consolation goal back for Shels in the 90th minute. Eight games now remain – anything is possible in this unpredictable division.
On a cloudy and dull evening on Corribside, United started the more promising of the two teams. After a scrappy first ten minutes, the scoring was opened in the 12th minute. Mikie Rowe, who produced an excellent performance, linked up with Conor O’Keeffe down the right wing and the full back delivered a superb ball into the box which was converted by the clinical Doherty. It was a goal that the American-born player will be proud of with his family from the USA in attendance at the game.
The 800 fans, including keen United supporter President Michael D. Higgins, were treated to a few crunching challenges; both teams knowing a result for Shelbourne would all but guarantee them as victors of the 2021 First Division title. But it was a United performance that gave the impression that this championship race is far from over. The Tribesmen defended admirably from early on, giving very few chances away to the top-scoring outfit in the division.
