One of Galway’s most famous and most unusual performers, Little John Nee will perform his new musical show, The Mother’s Arms at the Town Hall Theatre, next Monday, January 16 and Tuesday, January 17 at 8pm nightly. This follows a highly successful run at the Earagail Festival in John’s native Donegal.

For this show, set in the Mother’s Arms Singing Lounge, John is joined by the Highly Strung Orchestra and the combination promises to be electric.

The Mother’s Arms Singing Lounge is a venue past its prime. Its previous proprietor has recently been sent to prison and his daughter Rose has returned from a failed marriage in the Florida swamps to run the place, but the banks are circling like vultures. It’s been a long time since there was any singing in this venue.

On a beautiful summer morning a vintage automobile struggles up the hill, driven by Taxi Mc Dermott, the founder member of The Caledonia Highly Strung Orchestra, and a new era begins.

The Mother’s Arms is a show littered with wonderful moments. There’s a 70 year old woman who describes the details of her recently acquired tattoos. Then there’s Rose, the pub’s landlady, who managed to escape a Deliverance-like fate in Florida.

For one scene, two headlights are raised over the host’s head as he takes on the persona of a boy racer. Scenes like these and zany lyrics such as Do the Mhatama Gandhi/and let in the light, will make fans of Little John’s previous shows realise they have truly arrived on Planet Nee!

The Highly Strung Orchestra, who perform music for the show, features Jeremy Howard, Andrew Galvin and Orlaith Gilcreest.

The trio play piano, saxophone, clarinet, guitar, bazoukis, petrol cans and more throughout the performance . . . and they cluck like chickens.

Booking is no open at the Town Hall Box Office, 091 569777 or www.tht.ie Tickets are €13 or €11 concession.
