THE Galway minor footballers failed to turn the tables on Mayo when suffering a six-point defeat in Monday’s Connacht Final at MacHale Park in Castlebar.

On the evening, the Galway boys were largely outplayed by the home side, who were much slicker in attack and far more effective in defence. In truth, Mayo were in control for the vast majority of this game against a Galway side which struggled to produce the same level of quality as their opponents.

A late change on the Galway team saw Ryan Flaherty start in place of Charlie Cox, with Flaherty lining out in the full back line. Tomás Farthing played in a sweeper role, as Galway looked to avoid the concession of a scoring total similar to the one they suffered last month against Mayo, when the sides met in Tuam in the group stage of the competition.

The opening minutes were cagey in Castlebar, with both sides keeping numbers back in defence early on. Mayo corner forward Niall Hurley opened the scoring after six minutes, after his strong run from the right corner ended with a point. Galway had a goal chance three minutes later, when Seán Dunne had a shot in the small square blocked by Mayo full back John MacMonagle. The subsequent counter attack saw the ball worked up-field to Hurley, who registered his second point.
