Galway City Tribune – The campaign to deliver a light rail system for Galway is building up steam, a public meeting on the proposal was told this week – with a petition in support, signed by 22,000 Galwegians, set to be presented to the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross.

Speaking at the meeting, long-time campaigner for a ‘Gluas’, Catherine Connolly TD, told a crowd of around 70 people that the need for light rail in the city was greater now than ever.

Deputy Connolly said the response to the petition dispelled any myth that there wasn’t a demand for such a service in the city.

“I had raised light rail in the Dáil with Minister Ross, or Lord Ross as he’s called on occasion. What he said was there wasn’t the density of population, but mostly he said there was no demand.

“We collected the signatures over an eight-week period and we got 22,000 signatures. It wasn’t an online petition because I don’t think that would have reflected the people of Galway. People were mad keen,” said Deputy Connolly.

“We are calling on the Minister to start a feasibility study for light rail in Galway. It is my intention to hand those 22,000 signatures to the Minister,” she continued.
