Three teenagers had to be rescued from Hare Island this evening after being cut off by the tide.

Galway RNLI lifeboat received a call at around 6.25pm about the three males in their late teens who had gone for a walk to the island earlier in the day and were cut off.

Members of the public spotted they were in difficulty and contacted the Lifeboat station at Galway Docks.

RNLI volunteer crew Brian Niland (Helm), Ros Forde, Ian O’Gorman and John O’Sullivan arrived within 10 minutes and brought the three teens safely ashore. They did not require medical attention.

Lifeboat Operations Manager Mike Swan says the youths did the right thing by staying on the island and waiting for help.

“We would urge people to be aware of their surroundings and mindful of the tides when out walking on the bay as it’s easy to lose track of time this time of year.”
