Galway City Tribune – German discount retail chain Lidl is planning a new €2.5 million supermarket and café in Knocknacarra – right next door to its rival Aldi.

Plans will be submitted to Galway City Council next week for a new single-storey foodstore with an off-licence over a gross floor area of 2,185 square metre, with net retail space of 1,387 sq m on a 1.5-acre site at the corner of the Western Distributor Road and Bóthar Stiofáin.

Lidl Ireland has also sought permission for a separate, free-standing single-storey café measuring 66.5 sq m on the overall site, which will be accessed via the unnamed link road between Bóthar Stiofáin and the Gateway (Knocknacarra) Retail Park.

The greenfield site adjoins the Aldi carpark and also has frontage onto the Distributor Road. The Lidl store would be around 240 sq m bigger than the adjacent Aldi.
