Liam Mellows capture U-13 County B title
Liam Mellows 2-6 Oranmore/Maree 1-4
Liam Mellows U-13 Boys continued the great year for Mellows Juvenile club when they captured the County U-13B title recently.
Oranmore/Maree provided the opposition and when these two sides met during the year it had ended in a draw in a match with Oranmore/Maree unlucky not to win.
This set the scene for what proved to be a cracking game served up by two teams of great quality. Mellows got off to a flying start when after two minutes the ball fell loose close to the Oranmore/Maree goal, and Eoin Finnerty was there to hammer it into the back of the net.
This led to a period of dominance for Mellows with Brian McSweeney and Kevin Hourigan getting on top in midfield. Conor Hynes was a thorn in Oranmore/Maree’s side and was unlucky not to score on two occasions after making some beautiful runs.
Cian Girloy laid on a beautiful pass to Jack Keville who calmly knocked it over for a point, before Oranmore/Maree opened their account with a point. The full-back lines on both sides were being tested and Conor Hughes and Ciaran Dillon were up to the task and Daragh Conneely made two vital clearances.
The hurling on display by both sides was out of the top drawer and when Oranmore got the last point of the half everyone in the large crowd were looking forward to more of the same in the second half.
