Leisureland closed for summer as bill tops €1m
The worst flooding in the 41 year history of Leisureland is set to leave a final bill for repairs of over €1 million – with the pool at the complex not now set to reopen until mid-September at the earliest.
Board members were told at a special meeting on Friday that the pool, which needs to be completely re-tiled, will not reopen for another six months while the adjoining gym should be ready for use by mid-July.
All of the gym equipment was completely destroyed by flooding on January 3, while experts have decided that the sea water damage will force a re-tiling of the pool, which cannot be completed until September.
On Friday, the Board of Management was informed that the final bill will reach about €1 million, while a programme of work is underway at the Salthill facility.
The Chairman of the Board of Management, Cllr Donal Lyons, said that agreement had been reached with an insurance company over a timescale for revamping the venue.
“It is vital that all repairs identified following the flood are completed within the time-frame laid out and that the whole complex is fully operational as soon as possible. It is a vital recreational facility for the community,” said Cllr Lyons.
Final technical examinations, to determine the overall cost of the repairs, were carried out at the complex yesterday.
The second week in July has been set as the target date for completion of the revamp of the gym, with work set to commence next week on wall and floor tile removal.
