Legendary Fureys for Loughrea concert
Legendary folk group, the Fureys, will return to Galway on Friday, March 22, for a concert in the Lough Rea Hotel and Spa.
The Fureys have been entertaining audiences at home and abroad for 41 years, with songs such as The Green Fields of France, I will Love You, Leaving Nancy, Sweet 16, The Old Man, Red Rose Café, From Clare to Here, Her Father Didn’t Like Me Anyway and Steal Away.
They attribute their musical success to their parents, Ted and Nora, who were also accomplished musicians and encouraged their children to play music from an early age. The lads formed the group in 1978 following an accident.
George and Paul Furey and Davey Arthur had been touring Denmark in a band called the Buskers, while Eddie and Finbar were touring in Germany at the same time.
Eddie and Finbar were involved in a road accident and when George and Paul heard about it, they drove to Germany to be with their brothers.
The musicians decided they should join forces – marking the start of the Fureys and Davey Arthur. There have been various incarnations of the group since then. Davey Arthur moved on in 1993, while Finbar left in 1996 and Paul died suddenly in 2002. However, George and Eddie have kept the group flag flying with regular tours and a recently-released CD The Fureys. . . 40 Years On. . .To Be Continued
