THERE is still leeway for negotiations on securing a better CAP deal from Europe, according to Galway IFA Chair Stephen Canavan.

He said that following a meeting last week with EU Agriculture Commissioner, Janusz Wojciechowski, there were clear indications that the deal for Irish farming could be improved.

“The Commissioner really emphasised the importance of Ireland as a primary food producer within the EU and told us that the CAP deal was still open to change,” Stephen Canavan told the Farming Tribune.

Janusz Wojciechowski was in Dublin last week where he addressed members of the IFA’s National Council on various issues and challenges facing the agricultural sector.

In his address, he highlighted the issue of food security within the EU and the importance of the Union being able to meet its own food requirements.

He told the IFA Council members that it wasn’t his intention to reduce meat and milk production from withing the EU member states.

According to Stephen Canavan, the Commissioner also emphasised that it wasn’t the intention of the European Union to reduce livestock numbers in countries like Ireland who had a key role to play on food security issues.

“I think that the Commissioner definitely left a door open for us in terms of trying to get a better deal from CAP. There were encouraging signs from him.
