League safety at last for Utd’s draw kings

SAFETY with a game to go — they’d have taken that at the start of the season.
While mathematically it is still possible for Galway United to finish in the play-off spot, it would take two results of freakish magnitude this weekend to see that happen.
The point they took in the RSC last Friday night means they can’t be caught by bottom place Longford Town, so automatic relegation is not an issue.
They are three points above the playoff spot, but given that their goal difference is -8 compared to Waterford’s -24, it is safe to assume the goal for the season — survival — has been attained.
United needed just a point on Friday night, and the league’s drawspecialists — their latest stalemate was their 14th in 32 games — set out their stall to get just that.
