Tuam Stars were crowned Junior A champions last Friday but not before a dramatic and controversial final few moments including two major decisions before Tony Keating’s team got over the line.

Jack Davin’s free in injury-time was the difference but the north Galway side looked well on their way before St Michael’s launch a comeback.

Michael Hughes’ team were resilient and refused to concede, even when trailing 1-11 to 0-9 with 12 minutes remaining. Harry Browne and Neil Grogan set up Conor Hoctor for a 49th minute score before captain Plunkett Tormay allowed Greg Rogan reduce the deficit to three five minutes later.

St Michael’s needed a goal, and they got one entering the final minute of normal time – and it was a goal that caught every off guard!

Referee Shane Hehir signalled for a foul and there was a brief moment in play. Everyone switched off except Rogan, who asked the Milltown official could he proceed. The referee agreed and the St Michael’s centre forward kicked towards goal as Tuam keeper Darragh Creaven ran back into position – shades of Kerry’s Mikey Sheehy and Dublin’s Paddy Cullen in the 1978 All-Ireland Final.
