Last ditch efforts to reinstate seven day burial service in city
Galway city council has agreed to set up a working group in a last ditch effort to re-instate the seven day burial service.
The Sunday burial service ceased on the 31st of December 2012, but several councillors have been campaigning for months to get the full service returned.
The decision to stop burial service arose out of the council’s legal requirements as set out in the working time act and the health, safety and welfare at work act.
Director of service Ciaran Hayes told last evening’s meeting there had been no adverse reaction from clergy, undertakers or from the public on the move.
However, City Councillor Padraig Conneely said people had spoken to elected members and wanted the 7 day burial returned.
Councillor Ollie Crowe says the working group will present ideas at the next meeting of the local authority.
