Larger venue needed for popular classical concerts

The next concert in the Lunchtime with ConTempo series will take place on Tuesday, December 1, from 1.10-1.50pm.

The monthly series, run by Galway Music Residency, is proving so popular this year that December’s concert is being moved to St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in Market Street. Previous concerts this season have taken place in the Galway City Museum, but the crowds are proving too large that The Galway Music Residency has decided to locate to a bigger space.

The Galway ConTempo Quartet will perform Bedřich Smetana’s String Quartet no. 1 in this new venue.

Smetana wrote this after he had become deaf and completed it in 1876.  The work consists of sketches of periods from Smetana’s life – something conveyed in its subtitle, Z mého života (From My Life).

Featuring Bohemian dance and a love song, the final movement concludes with the sound almost fading away, reflecting what was happening in the composer’s own life.

Admission to this concert is free, open to all and early arrival is recommended.
