Lands at a city suburb, originally designated for housing, have now been permanently earmarked for sports and leisure facilities only.

An original provision in the city draft development plan would have allowed more housing be built on six acres of land in Ballybane.

This week, the city council voted in favour of changing the provision to allow just recreation and amenity facilities be built there instead.

The lands are part of the large green area adjoining Castlepark, Rian Luachra and rocklands estates.

Galway city councillor Derek Nolan says more housing is not what’s needed in Ballybane.
